Very helpful book May 29, 2010
This book answers alot of questions that come up in praying the hours that even a seasonsed LOTH breviary user can't find the answers to. The dodo jokes/references can be alittle grating on the nerves but how this book helps one with the hours allows for one to easily overlook these small annoyances.
Pony Express would have been faster! Jan 25, 2010
Book was received in great (new) condition. The only problem with this order was the time that it took to arrive. This item was shipped from Indiana, less than 200 miles from me, and yet took a total of 14 business days to arrive at my door. I am fortunate that I did not need this book for a class.
An entertaining way to learn the Devine Office Dec 25, 2009
I love this book! I have a copy that I have been using to learn to pray the Devine Office and then bought one for a friend. The author approaches the Devine office from a somewhat humerous manner. I like how she breaks it down and takes you so far and asks you to work on that before returning to the book. She makes learning this prayer fun.
Excellent book Dec 19, 2009
This is an excellent book for those who pray the Liturgy of the Hours and for those who wish to learn how. Written in a clear, easy to read style. I highly recommend it.
Helpful, If Irritating Nov 16, 2009
The Divine Office for Dodos - an obvious riff on the Dummies and Idiots titles - is a book that attempts the same sort of bottom-up, take-out-the-fear approach, but only succeeds with some difficulty. That's partly because the humor falls flat, as other reviewers indicate, but also because the book lacks the visual structure that helps the Dummies/Idiots books work so well.
The instruction is effective enough in the end. Follow along and you will gain a knowledge of the structure of the office and will be able to pray it. But it is a slog, the instructions are very repetitive (even on the simplest points), and it seems needlessly complex. A few simple charts would go a long way to conveying structure more effectively than page after page after page of text.
At times, the instruction seems more geared to children than adults. As an example, consider the pattern of "look through this section, look through that ... what did you notice? ... did you notice ______? Good for you!" which is repeated throughout. Just Horrible.
I give 4 stars because the book does teach the office. I can't give 5, due to the issues described above. If you wish to learn to pray the office on your own, however, this book is probably the best choice available.
