Good basic book Jul 30, 2003
I love Joyce Meyer and I feel like she has a true talent in expressing how we can change our lives. I think if you are someone with a true eating disorder or a food addiction then you still will require some additional help but Joyce does give her style of advice in her true Joyce-style of talking. I readily admit you won't find everything you need in this book if you struggle with a serious food addiction but it will make a nice addition to your library. For me, there is a lot of more complex things going on with why I struggle with food etc. but I still like this book and reread it. The basic premise is always that we can rely on Christ to strengthen and heal us and if you are a Joyce fan you will want this one.
Joyce helps us with the spiritual and emotional aspects of overeating. If you are a compulsive eater though and you need to know what is making you biologically crave sweets, there IS a reason. If you are a carbohydrate/sugar addict like me you can even have your blood glucose tested and see if your levels are high. If you are insulin resistant, you will know easily by asking yourself if you have constant cravings for sweets and other high carb foods. If so, you need to RUn, not walk but run to the store and buy the Atkins book. Forget all the people who bash it. Joyce says all the time "people only critize you when they want something you have BUT they are not willing to do what you did to get it." A lot of carb addicts are not willing to give up the addictive substance but if you are willing, Atkins gives you a way to get through the carb withdrawals and find peace finally. No more cravings. These 2 books will help you greatly in your journey.
Learned Something but not what I was hoping for May 26, 2003
I did like this book for other reasons than its ability to help me look at food differently (I can easily gorge myself on cookies... even after reading the book). BUT Joyce mentioned how she gave up caffiene because it was hurting her body and not helping. She also mentioned in the book about The Tree that Adam and Eve were not to eat from. Out of those two subjects she mentioned it made me think of how people are always saying "If I were Adam or Eve, I wouldnt have eaten the forbidden fruit." So I challenged myself to give something up that "hurt" my body and wasnt good to eat anyways. ICE CREAM was my "tree". My body doesnt like ice cream though I LOVE IT. It makes me cramp... ANYWAYS my point is... though the book did not take me where I was hoping (ie a better view of food) it did take me to where I have given up my passion for Ice Cream for good. Its been 3 months or so and i have no desire for it. So maybe the book did help me. I dont really know!
Not much of a help Aug 29, 2002
I love Joyce Meyer, she has helped change my life. But, this book was a big disappointment.
Joyce has obviously not had a problem with binge eating or a thyroid disorder.
She only needed to lose about 20 pounds and was never overweight in her childhood. She's really not a good resource on this topic.
Buy all her other books, but not this one.
Facile and Simplistic May 20, 2002
I bought this book out of curiosity, having enjoyed seeing Joyce Meyer preach on television. Her down-to-earth approach to Christianity has obviously drawn a large audience.
This book was a disappointment. I had the impression it was probably written in a week or less, once an outline was generated.
Fighting the 'bulge' in middle age, I found Mrs. Meyer's approach to eating and overeating quite simplistic. We are still learning the root causes of obesity. We can all state, 'eat sensibly and exercise more'; that's nothing new. I can look in my Bible for all references to eating and gluttony; it wasn't a problem for society when the Bible was written. As much as I love my Bible, it isn't a guidebook for controlling overeating, and neither is Mrs. Meyer's book.
This book would've worked better as a brochure at a fraction of this price. DON'T expect to see anything new or enlightening in this book, it ain't there.
Great book on Weight Control Apr 6, 2000
This book will encourage you to lose weight. It helps you to take the focus of yourself and on to God. It will free you from bondage and will help you to keep food in its proper place!
